Kessler Custom Artist Series Flute & Piccolo Package
Professional Design & Select Materials
Kessler Custom instruments are designed to provide a perfect combination of performance, quality and value for our customers. We work hand in hand with our factory partners in order to achieve this goal. Our Kessler Custom Flute & Piccolo package offers players an unbeatable performance setup at a price that is unrivaled in the industry!
The concept behind our Flute & Piccolo was a simple one: provide players high-caliber instruments in a budget-friendly price point. This was done by focusing on the DESIGN rather than the marketing. In the end, the design of a flute & piccolo (specifically the headjoint) is more important than the materials that the instruments are made out of. Granted, the material does still make a difference, but its difference is not as drastic. Don’t worry, we didn’t skimp on the materials with our Flute & Piccolo. Read on to find out more!
Headjoint Design
With our Flute & Piccolo, we focused on the design. Both instruments feature a hand-cut, professional design headjoint that allows for excellent tonal expression and a quick response. With the flute, the headjoint features a sharp blowing edge with a sharp drop-off lip plate to allow for a free-er blow and quick response. The piccolo utilizes a thin-style bubble headjoint for enhanced resonance with an integral lip plate that is complimented by it’s wave style embouchure cut. This combination gives amazing power, clarity and tone precision.
Keywork Design
The keywork of our flute features all of the features that most players want standard. Features such as Off-Set G with Split E Mechanism, French Style Pointed Key Arms, Low B with Gizmo and high-end padwork. The piccolo features a comfortable design and utilizes a split E mechanism.
C# Trill Key
Our Kessler Custom flute is also equipped with the C# Trill key standard! This key mechanism is an absolutely amazing feature to learn to utilize. A flute with C# trill key can do several unique things that you cannot do without it. Here is a list of the most common:
- B to C# in the First and Second Octaves: By providing the C# with a full-sized tone hole, the intonation is better. Additionally, the two-finger trill is avoided.
- C to C# in the First and Second Octaves: Moved from the first finger left hand to the first finger right hand, the trill is generally faster and better in tune.
- High G to A in the Third Octave: Perhaps the better name for the C# trill key would be the High G to A trill key. Finger high G and trill the C# trill and the upper trill key. An otherwise awkward, treacherous, and too-common trill is made easy.
- High G to Ab: Better in tune and much more comfortable.
- High F# to G#: Finger high F# and trill the C# Trill Key. Much easier than the conventional fingering.
- High Ab to Bb: A Mahler favorite. Finger the high Ab and trill both trill keys and the C# Trill Key.
- Tremolos and Shakes: All the first octave, left-hand notes can be tremoloed with C# by just using the C# Trill Key. The same notes can be tremoloed with D natural by using the C# Trill Key and the upper trill key together.
- Pianissimo high Ab: Play second octave Ab with all the left hand keys depressed, add the C# Trill and the high Ab will appear softly and in tune.
Additional Information
Flute: Special Japanese Nickel-Silver
The design is more important than the material that the flute is made out of. However, this does not mean that the material doesn’t make a difference. Solid Silver has always been the industry’s preference as it gives a richer tone than traditional nickel-silver as it is heavier. Silver is also easy to manufacture with as it is a softer metal. The downside to silver is the cost.
This is why we chose a special Nickel-Silver from Japan.
- Normal Nickel-Silver: 60% Copper, 20% Nickel, 20% Zinc
- Japanese Nickel-Silver: 67% Copper, 30% Nickel, 3% Zinc
This alloy gives us a heavier nickel-silver that is closer to the weight of Solid Silver helping to give our Performance Flute a richer tone more in line with solid silver, but without the price!
Solid Silver Riser
The headjoint is the most important part of its performance. On the headjoint, the riser (this is the tube that connects the lip plate to the headjoint tube) makes the most ounce per ounce difference in your flute’s performance. So we did decide to pair a Solid Silver Riser with the Japanese Nickel-Silver tube to give as rich of a tone with as affordable of a cost possible.
Piccolo: Special Grenadilla Composite
The Kessler Custom Composite Piccolo utilizes a unique wood-based composite material. It contains 30% wood in order to increase the mass of the material and help improve the tonal depth of the piccolo. We experimented with many different formulas of this composite (including up to an 80% wood) but found that the 30% formula gave the perfect blend of:
- Tonal depth
- Exceptional resonance
- Lightweight
- Exceptional manufacturing tolerance
The manufacturing tolerance helps our composite piccolo also be able to use a harder pad that gives better stability for you as well as better projection of your sound!
Professional Setup
Every flute & piccolo that we send out to a customer is not released from us unless it has been completely setup in our shop first. This is because the setup on your flute is of the utmost importance! Sometimes, an instrument (regardless of who the manufacturer or the price point is) comes in needing 20 minutes of adjustments and then the very next one can require 2 hours!
This is why we perform our setup in our ProShop on every flute & piccolo before delivering it to our customers. You trust us with your purchase and we want to make sure that you are rewarded by giving you your new instrument setup flawlessly!
