Meyer Alto Sax Mouthpiece – Perfected by Theo Wanne

Meyer Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece – Theo Wanne Perfected
Classic Sound meets Modern Confidence

The Meyer Alto Sax mouthpiece is the most trusted mouthpiece in history. They have been used by the finest saxophonists since their creation. However, for years, players have wanted and needed more from their Meyer mouthpieces. Enter Theo Wanne. Starting in 2026, Classic Sound meets Modern Confidence with the new Meyer Alto Mouthpiece Perfected by Theo Wanne.

How do they play?
This is a tough one to fully answer due to the previous inconsistencies in Meyer mouthpieces… but perhaps that’s the best way to answer this question. They play consistent with each other. This means that if you grab 10 out of the box, you are going to find 10 VERY similar mouthpieces to each other – and you won’t find a “bad” one. Now to dig a bit deeper, they do play a bit brighter than previous Meyer models. This is due to the baffle shape being longer than before. Instead of a short rollover baffle with an inconsistent transition into the baffle slope and chamber, the new models have a little longer backend to the baffle leading into a consistent chamber transition. Note, this is not a “high baffle” by any means, but it is the reason for these playing a little brighter. This also increases overall response to the mouthpiece, and again, they will be far more consistent than they have been in decades.

Who is Theo Wanne?
For those who are not familiar with Theo, he is considered by most as the preeminent mouthpiece maker in the world. With unique designs and state of the art machines, Theo builds the world’s highest quality mouthpieces on the market. So when JJ Babbitt (the makers of Meyer) sought to improve the Meyer alto sax mouthpiece, they reached out to Theo for the collaboration that will redefine the sax mouthpiece market.

Step One – Molded at Babbitt
These new models will retain their core “Meyer Sound”. The mouthpieces will start their production at Babbitt using their traditional molding technique, original molds and their proprietary hard rubber formulation. This effectively creates a “mouthpiece blank” that is then sent to Theo Wanne.

Step Two – Perfected with Theo Wanne
At Theo’s facility in Washington, the Meyer blank is finished on Theo’s high end CNC machines where all of the fine details of the mouthpiece will be carved to near perfection. The tip opening, side rails, baffle, reed window and table will be machined by Theo’s machines. These new models will also have a perfectly flat table instead of a concave table. This improves reed seal as well as performance with a larger selection of reeds, including synthetics.

Step Three – Finishing & Buffing at Babbitt
These machine finished blanks then go back to Babbitt where the final buffing and finishing is completed. The Babbitt team working on these mouthpieces has been trained by Theo and his team for a new exacting standard of finishing. This retains the traditional Meyer “look” combined with the machining perfection of the machining.

This combination will give players the Meyer mouthpiece sound with the reliability and consistency that can only be produced by Theo Wanne! This consistency will allow players to no longer have to test through large selections of mouthpieces to find “the right one” – instead they will ALL be that great mouthpiece right out of the box!

*Note – these new models are sold as Mouthpiece Only. Meyer’s used to include a basic ligature and cap, but these new models do not.
