1974 Selmer Paris Mark VI Tenor Sax
Original Lacquer – ProShop Overhauled with Black Kangaroo Pads
The Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax is revered by many as the best saxophone ever made. While much of this is a personal opinion, one cannot argue that the Mark VI is surely among the all time best with virtually every major professional player throughout sax history performing on the Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax. Made continuously from 1954 through 1974 (with altos and tenors being made through 1976’ish & the baritone, soprano & sopranino made in to the early 1980’s), many players will group the earlier production among the best made and the highest performing of the Mark VI history.
A True “Player’s Horn”!
There are a lot of different type of buyers for Mark VI Tenor Saxes. Some are looking for the collector’s horn, some are looking for a horn with a certain serial number and others are simply looking for a horn that wails! This horn is what we refer to as a “Player’s Horn”. This means that even though it isn’t an early production model that other buyers might be looking for, this horn IS a horn that if you put your mouthpiece on, you will be blown away.
There are a lot of reasons behind this (no high F#, original lacquer, never damaged, plus the great overhaul we did), but suffice it to say that if you are looking for a great playing, reliable Mark VI Tenor Sax, then this is a horn you should really pay attention to! This horn wants to leap out of your hand with response while providing smooth key action AND reliability.
Serial 220076 – Original Lacquer, No High F#, Overhauled
This particular Mark VI Tenor Sax is serial number 220,076 and has all of its original lacquer in tact. It is a model without a high F#, which we feel is a beneficial thing for a Mark VI Tenor Sax. We find that, regardless of vintage, that Mark VI Tenor Sax models without the high F# have a more resonant, thicker tone. Finding a later production Mark VI Tenor Sax without a high F# though is not as common as the majority of them in the later 10 years of production had the key. In comparison, the first 10 years of VI production did not have this key as commonly.
ProShop Overhauled
This horn came to us in need of an overhaul… but being an Official Selmer Paris ProShop, we had to treat it better than a standard overhaul. Instead, this horn received our premier “ProShop Overhaul” service (a $1,500.00 job) so that we could offer someone an amazing Mark VI Tenor Sax at a price that was as rockin’ as the horn itself! This overhaul brings the horn to the highest level of mechanical stability and performance. In this overhaul, we seek to maintain the purity of the Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax performance and combine it with the solidity and response of the finest manufactured saxophones of today. In brief, this job includes:
- Complete Mechanical Refit
- Diamond Tone Hole Leveling
- Top Tier Pad Choice (Black Kangaroo with Black Resonators on this sax)
- 1 Year Shop Warranty
Full details of this job can be found on our SaxophoneRepairs.com website by clicking here. This job takes over 20 hours to complete and runs $1,500+ to perform on to a Mark VI. This service has already been performed on this Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax.
Black Kangaroo Pads
There is a lot of information about Kangaroo pads out there. There are pros and cons just like any other pad. However, the biggest benefit to Kangaroo pads is that they tend to be less prone to stickiness (some will tell you that they are impervious to sticking, but we aren’t buying that!). This is due to the more porous nature of the Kangaroo leather that allows moisture to transfer through the leather easier. We used a pad that then has a moisture barrier in it to prevent that moisture to transfer to the felt underneath. This gives you the benefit of the Kangaroo leather without the downside of them becoming harder quicker due to moisture absorption.
Kangaroo leather is also VERY strong and does not tear as easily as traditional leather. This helps to improve long term durability of your pads. The Kangaroo leather also gives the horn a little mellower sound compared to some of the other harder pads on the market due to the above mentioned porosity. Lastly, these pads are setup with a black domed nylon resonator. This helps give this horn a great look combined with it’s exceptionally solid feel.

Additional Information
We know how personal buying a musical instrument can be. Players have an obvious concern with shipping a saxophone from out of state that you haven’t even had a chance to try. Combine that with the large ticket price of this horn and it’s obvious that many customers can become hesitant about pulling the trigger only to lose out to another buyer because they waited too long. Don’t let that be you!
With this amazing Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax, we know how to pack it safely so that it arrives to you without issue. Once you receive it, you then have 3 days to evaluate the saxophone in the comfort of your own home to make sure that it is the perfect sax for you. To be blunt, if you get this horn, you are not going to send it back. Due to it’s condition and the ProShop Overhaul that we performed, we can guarantee that this is the BEST Mark VI Tenor Sax that you will have ever touched!
