The Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax is revered by many as the best saxophone ever made. While much of this is a personal opinion, one cannot argue that the Mark VI is surely among the all time best with virtually every major professional player throughout sax history performing on the Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax. Made continuously from 1954 through 1974 (with altos and tenors being made through 1976’ish & the baritone, soprano & sopranino made in to the early 1980’s), many players will group the earlier production among the best made and the highest performing of the Mark VI history.

Serial 109,638 – Original Lacquer, No High F#, Overhauled
This particular Mark VI Tenor Sax is serial number 109638 and has almost all of its original lacquer in tact. It is a model without a high F#, which we feel is a beneficial thing for a Mark VI Tenor Sax. We find that, regardless of vintage, that Mark VI Tenor Sax models without the high F# have a more resonant, thicker tone. The neck is the original, matched serial number neck and has never had any damage to it’s tube. We have completely overhauled the horn, but this is no standard overhaul…

Specific Cosmetic Issues
No horn from the 1960’s is likely to have survived this long unscathed! This horn has had no Serious damage to it. We consider damaged to the tube’s acoustic design to be “serious” (i.e. bent neck, neck pickup installation, bent body tube, damaged tone holes from a drop, etc…). This horn has also had no re-soldering to it ever. However, there are a few specific areas of cosmetic blemish that we want to point out below.

The worst is at one point, it looks like the rim of the bell got slightly bent and repaired. This is evident in a crinkle to the lacquer in that area. There is also a dent that was removed in the throat of the bell that was pushed out too far. There are a few small dings in the bow that we left in the horn since they were very small and you risk damaging the lacquer around it. There is a small spot of worn lacquer on the back of the bell and the typical scratches on the body tube near the strap hook ring.
