Kessler Custom Performance Series Curved Soprano Sax
Performance Series Curved Soprano Sax Features
Our Performance Series Curved Soprano Sax features the same advanced bore design used in our straight models. This helps to maintain a wonderfully rich core to the horn’s sound. This bore is combined with a light weight “single post to body” construction to make the instrument vibrate easier than heavier “ribbed construction”… which is essential on a curved soprano sax! This helps to decrease the resistance of the horn and makes it respond easier.

Available Finishes
The standard Performance Series curved soprano sax is offered in a traditional gold lacquer with plastic finger touches. However, unlike our Performance Series alto and tenor saxes, we offer our Performance Series Curved Soprano Sax models in our alternate Vintage Dark Lacquer finish with black cultured pearl finger touches. We also offer the Performance Series soprano saxophones in a Straight Soprano model in both finishes!

Is this the Right Soprano for You?
Soprano Saxophones are very misunderstood instruments. They are commonly considered more difficult to play than an alto or tenor saxophone.
In reality, the problem with soprano saxophone has more to do with how they are played rather than the soprano sax itself. Plainly put, you cannot play a soprano sax the same way you would an alto sax as they are not the same instrument! Dave Kessler wrote an article about this very issue and details:
- Why is soprano harder to play?
- How to choose a soprano
- How best to approach playing soprano
Take a moment and read the article here: Dave Kessler’s Music Blog – Choosing a Soprano Sax
Every soprano sax that we send out includes a copy of our “Soprano Sax Playing Tips Guide” that will help players achieve the best performance out of their soprano sax. You can also download a PDF copy of that guide by clicking here.
Professional Setup
Every horn we send out to a customer is not released from us unless it has been completely setup in our shop first. This is because the setup on the horn is of the utmost importance! Sometimes, a saxophone (regardless of who the manufacturer or the price point is) comes in needing 20 minutes of adjustments and then the very next one can require 2 hours! So if you were to get 5 of the same model right out of the box, they will all play different which leads people to believe that they are “good” or “bad” saxes… but the reality is that the one that was the best out of the 5 was likely the one that needed the least amount of work and on the flip side, the “bad” sax was the one that needed 2 hours worth of adjustments!
Once the same 5 saxophones are properly regulated and adjusted to perfection, they become near identical saxophones that even the pickiest of players would be challenged to pick a true “favorite” horn. However, since most stores do not or even can not perform this setup, the player never knows this and is simply relying on the luck of the draw. This is why we perform our setup (in our www.SaxophoneRepairs.com ProShop) on them before delivering your new sax to you. You trust us with your purchase and we want to make sure that you are rewarded by giving you your ideal saxophone setup flawlessly!

Kessler Custom Performance Series Curved Soprano Sax

WARNING:

chip.cook –
I had been considering getting a Kessler for a while, but was uncertain as to the quality of the horn. I have read so many glowing reviews. Was this all true? My background…hobbyist amateur who has been playing sax since middle school, and I am now in my 40’s. I play soprano sax in two community bands. I have been playing straight soprano for ten years, most recently on an older Cannonball (White Knight series from 2001).
The Kessler Sax I purchased was the standard gold lacquer curved model.
Dave was very good at listening to my needs, and what I use my horn for. I told him that I had never played a curved soprano (with the exception of blowing on a Yani in middle school), and that I was hoping the curvy would be better for my hands (I have a little carpal tunnel). Dave said he would change out the thumb rest to a slightly different model that was more comfortable. We talked on mouthpieces, and what I had experience with. By the end of our conversation, I really felt like this would be a good horn purchase. Kessler even gave me free shipping!
Well, about six days later, my Kessler Custom Curved Soprano arrived. It was boxed very nicely. The case was wrapped in protective plastic, and everything in the case was brand new. It included:
-Soprano Sax
-Rico B7 MPC (and Rico MPC Cover)
-Rico H-Ligature (already had one, but great to have an extra…these are GREAT ligatures for the price)
-Sax Swab
-Cork Grease
-Neck Strap
-Card from Chuck Kessler stating he had personally tested this horn
-Very nice case…feels like a ProTec
I have owned a few saxophones over the years, but the last time I purchased a brand new horn was in the 1980’s…a Selmer Bundy II Alto which was made in the USA. This curved soprano, made in Vietnam is an EXCELLENT horn and made very well! Nothing seems “cheap and junk” on it. The finish is well coated, the parts seem sturdy, and the action is snappy.
As far as sound goes….intonation is spot on. The Kessler sounded in tune, better than with my Cannonball! As for tone, I would compare it to my Cannonball, but perhaps a little brighter (that could be the Rico B7 MPC, too). It is a very pleasant tone! Also, with blowing and resistance, I could not be more surprised how easy it was to play this horn. Yes, there is some resistance, but not like my Cannonball or other Taiwanese sopranos I have owned. I feel like I am blowing through a tighter tunnel with this horn. But if you relax your chops a little, it is easy to play low, middle or high notes. Love it!
Regardless of it being a Kessler, I learned that a curvy was better for me ergonomically. I have been playing a straight soprano for a decade now, and holding that curvy feels so nice in my hands! I will never purchase a straight soprano again. The balance and angle of a curved soprano works best for me in playing. I can also hear what I am sounding since the bell is in my face, which helps me in making changes to what is being played.
In summary, I think this horn is EXCELLENT for students and/or intermediate players. For professionals, it would be a great back up horn, and if I may dare (I am not a pro player), perhaps a good primary instrument! This is a very nice sax! Knowing the quality of this soprano sax from Kessler, I would have no reservation buying other saxophones from the Kessler line. Yes, the BIG 4 are great horns, and I have played a couple of them. But I can’t afford them! Kessler produces a great horn for the money.
My 2 cents for what it is worth…

The Kessler Custom curved soprano sax is a nice , well built horn. It is now my primary instrument as I have since sold my straight soprano. Quality build, warm sound at a good price. Highly recommend.
