The new Backun Signature Series Richard Hawkins Clarinet Mouthpiece is part of the new top end artist line of Backun mouthpieces. This model is the ultimate collaboration between clarinet performance master and mouthpiece maker Richard Hawkins and Backun the clarinet manufacturing experts.
A testament to everything learned over decades of mouthpiece making, the Hawkins Signature Bb Mouthpiece provides artists with a clear, dark and compact tone. The ability to remain flexible with ease, while holding the core sound of the instrument, is inherent in this signature mouthpiece that is equally at home in the teaching studio, orchestral and chamber concerts and in contemporary classical playing.
My new personal favorite! This mouthpiece is my go-to for an easy and clear tone with a dark roundness. It represents a long-term project that I have sincerely enjoyed playing, with positive results in resonance and ring.

The Richard Hawkins mouthpiece has a medium tip opening at 1.08 mm that is paired with a medium facing and the larger A-Frame chamber introduced on the Shifrin model.
Designed at Backun Musical Services using advanced CAD/CAM software and tested with 3D printing technology, the mouthpieces are crafted on a highly advanced nine-axis CNC machine. Finished in a unique done-in-one machining program that combines both the milling and lathing processes without the need for a second setup or re-calibration. This results in an exceptionally consistent mouthpiece that stays true to the original design.
Mouthpiece O-Rings
The new Backun Signature Series clarinet mouthpieces are designed with a set of 3 O-Rings for the mouthpiece fit instead of a traditional cork. *Tip from Hawkins: To re-lubricate signature mouthpiece o-rings, use a drop of almond oil or a tiny bit of cork grease on the inner wall of the barrel top tenon to improve ease of use.

Trial Policy
Kessler & Sons Music offers a 3 day trial / return policy by default on the Backun Richard Hawkins Signature Clarinet Mouthpiece. There are no cleaning fees or restocking fees (assuming that the item is returned in proper condition).
Before we ship any new Backun Richard Hawkins Signature Clarinet Mouthpiece, we install a blue protective film over the logo to help protect the logo from irreparable scratches while it is being tested. We also install a tooth patch before shipping. This way you can test the mouthpiece with less fear of damage. However, you can still damage the mouthpiece even with these protections, so make sure to handle it carefully while you are testing it. We recommend leaving these items on the mouthpiece during the testing phase and only to remove them after you have made the decision to keep the mouthpiece. Mouthpieces that are returned with irreparable scratches/marks might not be accepted for return.
