An affordable A clarinet is typically a myth – and when they are affordable, they are usually sub-par instruments. This problem has plagued clarinet players for decades without a solution – until now. The new Backun Alpha A Clarinet is a true professionally designed A clarinet, made from a proprietary synthetic and offered at an affordable price. Backun has been re-designing the clarinet since 2001 and in honor of the company’s 25th anniversary, they are launching an A Clarinet that is exactly what clarinet players have been asking for – the performance, affordable, A clarinet.

Lumiere Based Design
The Backun Alpha A Clarinet is largely based on the same bore and overall design of the revolutionary Lumiere in A. The Lumiere was designed as an A clarinet, not a Bb model that has been stretched out to the key of A. Instead, this design was made to be in the key of A from day one! This leads to better intonation and response throughout the range. This design was then made “more affordable” with the Model Q in A. The Model Q, still being a wood professional instrument is still a larger financial investment that prohibits players from making the purchase. Now, the Alpha A Clarinet bridges this gap in a truly amazing offering.

New Keywork for 2026!
The Backun Alpha A Clarinet is also one of the first models to feature the new “Gen 3” keywork design (this is our own description, not an official Backun description). The keywork angles for many players on Backun clarinets are not what they were used to. For most players, they would get used to this change, but for some they could not. So Backun listened (we were one of the ones loudly suggesting the change actually!). The new Gen 3 keywork fixes the issues with keywork that prevented some players from feeling at home on a Backun. This keywork is fantastic, fluidic and expertly designed. The Gen 3 keywork will be making its way through the rest of the Backun clarinet line as well, but available first on the Alpha A Clarinet as well as the Essence Series!

Professional Setup
Every clarinet we send out to a customer is not released from us unless it has been completely setup in our shop first. Sometimes, a clarinet (regardless of who the manufacturer or the price point is) comes in needing 20 minutes of adjustments and then the very next one can require 2 hours!
