1940 Selmer Balanced Action Tenor Sax

The Selmer Balanced Action Tenor Sax is revered as one of the best & most historic tenor saxophones ever made. Released in the mid to late 1930’s, the Balanced Action was a major redesign in saxophones and are arguably the appearance from Selmer of the “modern” saxophone. Today, these horns are known for their broad, rich tone that is not as focused as modern Selmer’s but still can posses a phenomenally responsive, rich tone.

About this Selmer Balanced Tenor – Serial 29,550

This horn came to us in need of a full overhaul. It was one of 2 horns used by a local professional (his other was a later production Mark VI). We do believe that the horn has been re-lacquered at some point in its life, but mainly because it just looks too good for its age! There are not the traditional buffing indicators from a re-lacquer, but the color, while good, just seems a hair “off” and due to its age, we just do not believe the lacquer to be original. Engraving is in excellent condition (see the many photos). The horn also has its original neck, and does not appear to have ever been damaged or bent.

Note – Serial numbers on Balanced Tenors were on the bell. The number on the body was a “body number” and is NOT the official serial number of the horn during this point in Selmer production. The bell number is the official serial number.
