Backun Signature Series David Shifrin Clarinet Mouthpiece
The new Backun Shifrin Signature Clarinet Mouthpiece is part of the new top end artist line of Backun mouthpieces. This model is a collaboration between clarinet performance master and mouthpiece maker Richard Hawkins, Backun the clarinet manufacturing experts, and legendary clarinet artist David Shifrin.
Somewhere on the scale of the unattainable, just short of the perfect reed and finding a unicorn in the wild is the perfect clarinet mouthpiece. Of course, none of these actually exist, but we can try to get as close as possible to perfect clarinet playing by practicing and finding equipment that helps make the hard work pay off! There are some days when playing the clarinet is easier than others and we sound closer to “ideal.” I feel fortunate that recently that after many years of effort and searching I am having more days of these days than ever. I attribute much of this to the new Signature mouthpiece designed by Richard Hawkins and produced by Backun. The result of many years of collaborative work, I was impressed by the dedication, artistry and care that Richard gave to this project and the investment made by Backun in state-of-the-art equipment and exacting production standards to produce a new mouthpiece designed from high quality hard rubber. I am enjoying the most consistent period of my playing career in terms of tone production, intonation, and articulation thanks to these new mouthpieces.
Facing Info
The Shifrin model has a medium-closed tip opening at 1.04mm that is paired with a medium long facing (19mm). Finally, a larger “A Frame” chamber is used for a big, rich and articulate sound.

Designed at Backun Musical Services using advanced CAD/CAM software and tested with 3D printing technology, the mouthpieces are crafted on a highly advanced nine-axis CNC machine. Finished in a unique done-in-one machining program that combines both the milling and lathing processes without the need for a second setup or re-calibration. This results in an exceptionally consistent mouthpiece that stays true to the original design.
Mouthpiece O-Rings
The new Backun Signature Series clarinet mouthpieces are designed with a set of 3 O-Rings for the mouthpiece fit instead of a traditional cork. *Tip from Hawkins: To re-lubricate signature mouthpiece o-rings, use a drop of almond oil or a tiny bit of cork grease on the inner wall of the barrel top tenon to improve ease of use.

Trial Policy
Kessler & Sons Music offers a 3 day trial / return policy by default on the Backun Shifrin Signature Clarinet Mouthpiece. There are no cleaning fees or restocking fees (assuming that the item is returned in proper condition).
Before we ship any new Backun Shifrin Signature Clarinet Mouthpiece, we install a blue protective film over the logo to help protect the logo from irreparable scratches while it is being tested. We also install a tooth patch before shipping. This way you can test the mouthpiece with less fear of damage. However, you can still damage the mouthpiece even with these protections, so make sure to handle it carefully while you are testing it. We recommend leaving these items on the mouthpiece during the testing phase and only to remove them after you have made the decision to keep the mouthpiece. Love this mouthpiece!! It helps to produce a clear, even, and beautiful tone. Articulation for me is easier and response is quicker clearer on this one, compared to other mouthpieces I’ve played on previously. Even though I came from a more open mouthpiece, I feel like I’m able to still play freely.
I’m into the look and the O-rings!
Dave spoke with me a bit and helped me with my selection as well; Thanks so much!!

Coming from a Vocalise G, this mouthpiece builds on the Vocalise line – a nice creamy, centered tone, but provides a richer core and much easier articulation. I’m really impressed with this mouthpiece!
