Kessler Custom OL7Pro Jazz Tenor Sax Mouthpiece
Based on Florida Otto Link Mouthpiece
Mouthpiece is THE MOST important piece of equipment for the jazz tenor saxophone player. With the professional mouthpiece market reaching new price points that are higher than what customers often are looking for, we have designed our Kessler Custom line of mouthpieces to give excellent performance and value to the player. To simplify the production and thus lower the cost, we only offer models in one facing rather than multiple models in many facings. These facings on our models are designed to fit what MOST players are looking for in a specific performance style.
Our OL7Pro model is our most popular jazz tenor mouthpiece. Based on a vintage facing (Florida Metal Link) and baffle (Early Babbitt Rubber Link), this model offers a great tonal core with easy response and projection. It offers solid versatility to be able to control the tonal depth while still giving the ability to brighten up and get edge when pushed. It remains one of our best sellers when customers test out mouthpieces in our store!
Facing Design
The OL7Pro uses a facing curved derived from a Vintage 1950’s Metal “Florida” Otto Link. Specifically designed after a Link 7 (.100″ tip opening), this offers great response and dynamic range control throughout all registers.
Baffle Design
The baffle is based a little more on the 1970’s “Early Babbitt” rubber Link pieces. This slightly higher, baffle gives just a hint more response and attack that a more traditional rollover baffle. With a scoop in the center of the baffle that quickly opens up to the chamber, this combines to offer an exceptional performance blend of rich tone with that little bit of added grit.
Chamber
We finish off the mouthpiece with a more traditional medium chamber. This helps maintain the more focused tonal core that many players are seeking.
Ligature Options
With our OL7Pro Jazz Tenor Sax Mouthpiece, we give you the choice in your ligature. A great ligature can help bring out the more of what the player wants from their mouthpiece.
Rovner Dark Ligature – Free Option
The Rovner Dark ligature is a industry standard that is easy to use. However, it is more dynamic than many players might realize. Most players use the Rovner as an inverted design (screw on the top of the mouthpiece). This allows the ligature material to go across the grain of the reed helping to give a little darker sound. However, the Rovner Dark is also designed to be used in the more traditional way, with the screw on the reed side. In this position, the tightening arms of the ligature secure the reed in-line with the grain and apply less pressure to the spine of the reed. For most players, this brings in added response and improved tonal presence. We recommend using it this alternate position. The screw can also be reversed so that it can be tightened from either the left or right side of the mouthpiece.
D’Addario H-Ligature – Free Option
The H-Ligature is a re-creation of the original vintage Harrison ligatures. These are an inverted (screws on the top of the mouthpiece), 2 screw, metal ligature. The reed contact on the ligature is in the shape of an H, hence the name. This ligature does an excellent job of offering minimal contact to the reed, allowing for excellent vibration. It is a brighter tone compared to the Rovner options. The only downside to this ligature is that if players overtighten the ligature screws, they will eventually bend the H in to more of an X, which then hinders the ligature’s ability to seal their reed.
Rovner VERSA Ligature – Upgrade Option
The Rovner VERSA is the most versatile of their designs. It offers a great combination of the darker tone of the Dark but with the quicker, more vibrant response of the H-Ligature. You can also further customize the performance by changing the weight & mass of the ligature through different reed plate inserts. This ligature is designed only to be used in the inverted position.
Vandoren Optimum Ligature – Upgrade Option
The Vandoren Optimum Ligature is a metal, single screw ligature with 3 removable reed plates. This ligature offers great tonal depth (due to it’s heavy mass design at the reed) but does not greatly impair the reed vibration. This Optimum also uses a double threaded screw design so that when you tighten the ligature, it does not shift out of position making it very easy to use.
Additional Information
Kessler & Sons Music offers a 3 day trial / return policy by default on instruments and mouthpieces. There are no cleaning fees or restocking fees (assuming that the item is returned in proper condition).
In order to protect the mouthpiece against scratches & marks when testing, we install a tooth patch before shipping. You are responsible for the condition of the mouthpiece while you are testing it. We highly recommend testing with a fabric style ligature to reduce the risk of scratching. Mouthpieces that are returned with irreparable scratches/marks might not be accepted for return.
