Scott Cao has built an amazing reputation among the finest players and teachers throughout the world. Instruments bearing his name are always of the utmost quality in performance and craftsmanship. The Scott Cao 850 Cannon Violin is part of the Scott Cao “Artistic Series” instruments. These instruments are each made in honor of historic violins and violin makers.

About this Used Scott Cao 850 Violin – Cannon, Made in 2016
Violins tend to play better as they age, whether through natural drying or through the vibrations that “settle” the wood through playing, the consensus is that violins only get better with age. This particular Cao 850 Cannon was sold new in our shop in December 2016. We originally received it in our shop in May of 2016 and hand picked it out of a larger batch. We then let the instrument sit and dry out in our wonderful desert climate before making it available for purchase in late 2016.

This instrument was the “pick of the litter” so to say according to all of our violin teachers (all professional violinists themselves). The instrument quickly sold in December 2016 and has been used under exceptional care by a student violinst. This player has since graduated on to one of the Scott Cao Signature Superior violins (a $10,000 violin!) and no longer needs this instrument. So we are selling it for them.

The photos shown are of the actual violin and as you can see, was kept in immaculate condition over the 3+ years of use. We have had our teachers play it and all agree that it is the BEST Scott Cao 850 violin in our store currently! Don’t miss out on this amazing instrument!

Scott Cao 850 – Cannon Model
The Scott Cao 850 Cannon is one of the most inquired about models in the series. Customers are interested in it due to the connection with Paganini. The original Cannon uses taller sides and a thicker top than many violins. This extra mass helped make the Cannon produce its signature dark, clear tone, but also added an extra level of difficulty as it requires a player with a stronger bow hand. The Scott Cao 850 Cannon has been modified slightly to balance out this performance style while still staying true to the original Cannon tonal characteristics.

About the actual Cannon
The home town of Niccolo Paganini (1782 – 1840), Genova is the place where the famous violin, made by Joseph Guarnerius del Gesu is conservated. It seems that Paganini came in possession of the ‘Cannone’ around 1802, although the circumstances are not very clear. Paganini used this violin throughout his entire career and he was quite jealous of it, since the only violinmaker who could make a copy directly from the original violin was Jean Baptiste Vuillaume.

During the winter of 1833/34 he was encharged to restore the Cannone and he took that opportunity to make a copy of it, that was given to Paganini: later the virtuoso passed that violin to his pupil Camillo Sivori (1815 – 1894) who left it to the town of Genova after his death. The two violins owned by Niccolo Paganini are today exhibited in a special room of the town hall building, now converted into a museum. According to his father’s will, the Cannone was consigned by the son of Paganini, Baron Achille to the Major of Genoa on 17th July 1851.
