Solist SAS201 Alto Sax
Performance Grade Student Alto Sax
Our Solist brand of instruments are built exclusively for us with value in mind. We realize that when shopping for a student alto sax, many parents and players do not want to or simply cannot afford to go spend a tone of money on a student instrument. Sadly, this has also opened up the market for many inferior quality instruments to be sold on auction sites, in swap meets and other stores that are simply looking for the lowest cost instrument that can be sold.
This is simply unacceptable for any player. We all NEED a good quality instrument in order to grow and progress and enjoy playing music. Inferior instruments detract from this and make it difficult for anyone to progress and grow in our playing ability.
Pro Design, Student Price
The Solist student alto sax is designed around a popular French professional concept. Most French pro designs are designed for the advanced player who can support their air column, which helps produce a richer tone. They will also use the heaviest “full ribbed” construction. Unfortunately, that also makes them more resistant for students. Most traditional student models are designed to be so easy to play & use the lightest weight “single post” construction that players tend to struggle to produce a richer tone as they develop.
Our Solist model uses a more responsive French pro design that features a slightly lighter “mini ribbed” or “split rib” construction. This way the student still receives a slightly easier to play horn but one that offers enough resistance that they can develop a richer tone as they progress, making it an excellent performance level value!
Features
As a Saxophone ProShop, we know how to provide you with an excellent horn. As this is one of our own products, we go the extra mile to make sure you receive a solid instrument, not just an affordable one. Some of these additional attention to details features include:
-
- Upgraded Pads with Metal Resonators
We use a Pisoni MyPad with metal resonators to provide a long life, trusted pad to your sax with great response. - Blued Steel Needle Springs
High quality tempered blued steel springs provide quick action and durability compared to cheaper steel wire springs. - Steel Bell Wire with Soldered Bead
The bell rim does include a steel wire inside of the bead to increase mass for bell note warmth and provide durability in the case of an accidental drop. We also have the factory solder the bead of the bell rim so that the steel wire inside of the brass can vibrate as one piece together further improving the tonal performance of the sax. - ABS Shell in Lightweight Case
Since this is a sax for students, a lightweight case is a must. However, many lightweight cases are also very fragile. The case we include uses an ABS outer rim shell inside of the fabric/foam materials to provide durability while still keeping the case lightweight. Integrated backpack straps and plenty of storage make this a great case for students. - Performance Mouthpiece with Upgrade Options
We include one of our Kessler Custom student C* mouthpieces with the Solist alto sax. This provides players a mouthpiece that they can start with and that promotes growth. We also offer several discounted upgrade options to other popular models to fit whatever need your student (or their teacher) might have!
- Upgraded Pads with Metal Resonators
Where’s it made?
In order to keep cost down, this sax is made in China – but that doesn’t mean much these days! Did you know that many major name brand saxes are now made in China? Not long ago, “Made in China” meant that the quality was low which is why the cost was low. However, over the past decade, we have seen massive improvements from China and it is no longer an issue of “where” it is made, but rather “who” is making it! We have partnered with this factory since 2011 with our top rated Solist Bari Sax. Now, we have worked with them to produce a super high quality and affordable alto that builds on this partnership.

Professional Setup
Every horn we send out to a customer is not released from us unless it has been completely setup in our shop first. This is because the setup on the horn is of the utmost importance! Sometimes, a saxophone (regardless of who the manufacturer or whether it is a student alto sax or a pro model) comes in needing 20 minutes of adjustments and then the very next one can require 2 hours! So if you were to get 5 of the same model right out of the box, they will all play different which leads people to believe that they are “good” or “bad” saxes… but the reality is that the one that was the best out of the 5 was likely the one that needed the least amount of work and on the flip side, the “bad” sax was the one that needed 2 hours worth of adjustments!
Once the same 5 saxophones are properly regulated and adjusted to perfection, they become near identical saxophones that even the pickiest of players would be challenged to pick a true “favorite” horn. However, since most stores do not or even can not perform this setup, the player never knows this and is simply relying on the luck of the draw. This is why we perform our setup (in our www.SaxophoneRepairs.com ProShop) on them before delivering your new sax to you. You trust us with your purchase and we want to make sure that you are rewarded by giving you your ideal saxophone setup flawlessly!
