Solist Intermediate French Horn
Screwbell with Backpack Style Case
Our Solist brand of instruments are built exclusively for us with the player and budget in mind. We realize that times are tough and especially when shopping for a Intermediate French Horn, many people do not want to or simply cannot afford to go spend $3,000+ on an intermediate French Horn. Sadly, this has also opened up the market for many inferior quality horns to be sold on auction sites, in swap meets and other stores that are simply looking for the lowest cost instrument that can be sold.
What is Solist?
Solist instruments are designed for Kessler & Sons Music to meet our exacting standards. We put focus on the core materials and design in order to provide you with a better intermediate French Horn for an affordable price. As a repair shop, we designed our horn to provide great durability and performance.
Our Solist Intermediate French Horn is the answer to this dilemma.
Additional Information
Solid Nickel-Silver Leadpipe
We utilize a solid nickel-silver leadpipe on our intermediate French Horn for improved durability (more resistant to corrosion than brass & stronger than brass) as well as a richer tone. This adds to the cost, but in the end, is worth the extra cost due to the improved performance.
Screwbell
Our Solist SFH-389 Intermediate French Horn utilizes a detachable screw bell design. This allows for the instrument to utilize a much more compact case for easier portability. Traveling with a screw-bell horn is a breeze compared to lugging around a large French Horn hard case! However, should someone want, they could still put the horn inside of a “fixed bell” case and simply leave the bell screwed on to the horn.
We include a great backpacking case with our French Horn. This case uses a very durable heavy weave fabric exterior and features back-pack straps that can also be easily packed away if the player prefers to carry their case the more traditional way (with the handle). There is also a large music pocket built right in!
Soldered Bell Rim
A soldered bell rim helps provide better resonance from the bell (as the steel wire in the rim will vibrate in unison with the bell wall instead of against it) as well as better durability. This feature might not sound like much and in reality, but it provides a very noticeable improvement on any brasswind instrument, but especially on an intermediate French Horn, it makes a massive improvement to the resonance and response of the horn!
Adjustable Pinky Hook
We use an adjustable pinky hook so that the grip of the horn can be further tailored to the individual player’s hand position. The paddles used are also an elongated paddle so that any player, regardless of hand size, can feel comfortable and at home

Case Options
By default, our Solist Intermediate French Horn includes a fantastic backpack case made for a screwbell horn. However, some players/teachers have expressed concern with younger students’ ability to properly use the screwbell feature. So, we also offer the ProTec French Horn case as either an “upgrade” or as an accessory purchase (so you can have both cases). Read more about the ProTec PB316CT Case on ProTec’s Website.
