1927 Vintage Conn New Wonder II (Chu Berry) Alto Sax
Excellent Condition – Fully Overhauled
The Conn New Wonder II Alto Sax (also known as the “Chu Berry” – even though Chu Berry played tenor) is an absolute classic piece of American Sax history. Popular for the big band era of playing, these Conn’s allowed for players to push a large amount of air through for a truly commanding sound. However, finding one of these in excellent condition, almost a century later, is not common… which is what makes THIS sax so amazing. This horn came in to us still with the original pads and heavily tarnished. However, it was in excellent physical shape. So being a Sax ProShop like we are, we knew we could bring this historic instrument back to it’s glory!
About this New Wonder II Conn Chu Berry Alto Sax #M200316
We unfortunately don’t know anything about the history of previous ownership of the horn. Instead, it came to us in need of rebuild, but the bones of the horn were solid. We have torn the horn completely apart and rebuilt it with a modified ProShop Overhaul. Normally we include diamond tone hole filing in our ProShop Overhaul, but you just don’t do that on these horns due to the rolled toneholes. Luckily, the tone holes were great on this horn since it had never been damaged. So the horn was fully cleaned and overhauled. We tore apart the microtuner on the neck as well to make sure it was fit and lubricated well to function like it did when it was new.
When doing an overhaul on a vintage classic horn, like a car, you want to keep it as “original” as possible. So we brought in a set of Music Medic’s white Kangaroo pads with a simple metal rivet in it. These pads are some of the finest on the market and are the perfect pad to bring out the most of this horn’s original performance soul.
The end result of the overhaul will leave you speechless. That classic Vintage Conn New Wonder (Chu Berry) alto sax sound and the smooth feel of a new horn. This is just a wonderfully rare piece of sax history.
- 1 Year “Shop Warranty” (pads & adjustments) through our shop is included.
Plating Condition
This Conn Chu Berry Alto has the satin silver body with the polished/burnished engraving section and keys, and the original polished/burnished gold plating to the inside of the bell. All the plating is original and in truly excellent condition. There are only a few small wear spots, and they are:
- Small spot on the B touch in the left hand pinky cluster.
- Some general wear on the neck tightening screw
- Some on the strap ring
- The edges of the keyguards on the backside of the horn (where they contact the case)
These are all very small and in no way take away from the impressive condition of the instrument.
The original case is also in great overall condition and included.
Trial & Return Policy
In the end, the only way to know whether or not this is the right horn for you is to play it. This is why Kessler & Sons Music offers a 3 day trial / return policy on instruments. This gives you the chance to test out of the horn (you have to order it and pay for it first of course) in your own environment and with your mouthpiece setup to make sure you love it. If for some reason you are not 100% happy with the horn, you can then send it back for a full refund (less shipping fees)! Granted, you are 100% responsible for the condition of this Conn New Wonder II alto sax while in your possession. So since it is silver, be very careful with it and make sure to swab it out immediately after playing it.
Of course, there are certain terms & conditions that apply to this, but you can find all the details of that by reading our terms & conditions (Click Here).
The original case (in great condition) is included. No mouthpiece is included.
