1955 Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax
Original Lacquer – ProShop Overhauled
The Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax is revered by many as the best saxophone ever made. While much of this is a personal opinion, one cannot argue that the Mark VI is surely among the all time best with virtually every major professional player throughout sax history performing on the Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax. Made continuously from 1954 through 1974 (with altos and tenors being made through 1976’ish & the baritone, soprano & sopranino made in to the early 1980’s), many players will group the earlier production among the best made and the highest performing of the Mark VI history.
Serial 58,070 – Matched Neck
This particular Mark VI Tenor Sax is serial number 58,070 and is original lacquer. This is an American market Mark VI with original (matched serial number) neck. The bell rim has had a bend/repair at one point so there is lacquer peel in that area as a result. Whomever repaired that damage did a perfectly good job repairing back to original shape. This horn has not had any other serious damage, but did have a pickup installed in the neck that we removed and repaired (see more below). The case is an older ProTec case. We would recommend a new case for it, and can give options to include in a new Selmer case or BAM case if the customer prefers.
ProShop Overhauled
This Mark VI Tenor Sax has been ProShop Overhauled in our Official Selmer Paris ProShop. More details of the overhaul are listed below, but we did transfer the original metal resonators to the new pads in the overhaul.
Neck Surgery
The neck pickup that was installed just had to go! Most technicians will simply remove the pickup and throw a patch over the top, but that leaves a distortion to the interior of the tube where the hole was. Luckily, this sax came to our shop as we don’t do “patch work” (see the pun there?!), we do surgery!!
Mr. Kessler performed this neck surgery himself. First, the old pickup and wads of solder were removed. Then after everything was cleaned up, we take a rod of brass, contouring the bottom of the rod to the same curvature as the tubing in the area, so that the patch insert will match the bore of the neck internally. This is then cut to the necessary thickness to match the neck, filed, and then inserted into the hole and secured, being silver soldered in place. The end result is that the neck hole was plugged and the shape of the brass, both on the exterior and the bore’s interior, were matched to the original neck and the neck’s original design was restored. This helped to restore the neck to as close to its original performance as possible!
