1967 Selmer Paris Mark VI Alto Sax
Original Lacquer – ProShop Overhauled

The Selmer Mark VI Alto Sax is revered by many as the best saxophone ever made. While much of this is a personal opinion, one cannot argue that the Mark VI is surely among the all time best with virtually every major professional player throughout sax history performing on the Selmer Mark VI Alto Sax. Made continuously from 1954 through 1974 (with altos and tenors being made through 1976’ish & the baritone, soprano & sopranino made in to the early 1980’s), many players will group the earlier production among the best made and the highest performing of the Mark VI history.

Serial 149,040 – Original Lacquer, No High F#, Medium Bow, Overhauled
This particular Selmer Mark VI Alto Sax is serial number 149,040 and has almost all of its original lacquer in tact. There is no real damage to the history of the instrument – just some cosmetic issues, mainly on the neck. As you can see in the neck photos, there is far more lacquer wear and acid bleed than the rest of the horn. Since serial numbers were no longer stamped on the horns at this vintage, there is no way to for sure know that this is the original neck, but the lacquer that is in tact has the same shade as the rest of the horn, so we can only assume that it is the original.

Other than that, this horn is in truly great overall condition. There is a re-soldered keyguard flange on the low C guard, but it was done well. There are a few lacquer wear spots and minor dings but all of these are minor. Why didn’t we take out the minor dings you ask? Simple, that risks damaging the lacquer in the area so if the ding is really small, its not going to impact performance but removing it will impact the finish. So we opt to leave those in the end – and this horn is a screamer by the way so they really do not impact the performance!

This is a model without a high F#, which we feel is a beneficial thing for a Mark VI as it allows the air column to stay uninterrupted by a tonehole chimney a little longer inside the horn. We find that, regardless of vintage, Mark VI saxes tend to have a more resonant, thicker tone without the high F#.

ProShop Overhauled
This horn came to us in need of an overhaul… but being an Official Selmer Paris ProShop, we had to treat it better than a standard overhaul. Unfortunately, the horn was overhauled in the late 80’s and the tech didn’t keep the original resonators. So we were not able to transfer them (which we normally would in this vintage of overhaul).
