1963 Selmer Paris Mark VI Tenor Sax
Original Finish – Lacquer Body with Silver Keys
French Assembled & Finished
The Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax is revered by many as the best saxophone ever made. While much of this is a personal opinion, one cannot argue that the Mark VI is surely among the all time best with virtually every major professional player throughout sax history performing on the Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax. Made continuously from 1954 through 1974 (with altos and tenors being made through 1976’ish & the baritone, soprano & sopranino made in to the early 1980’s), many players will group the earlier production among the best made and the highest performing of the Mark VI history.
Serial 108,738 – French Assembled & Finished – All Original
This particular Mark VI Tenor Sax is serial number 108378 and has its original finish in tact. This horn was a 100% French Assembled & Finished horn (more on that in a moment). It has a lacquered body with silver plated keys and is all the original finish. There is not a high F# (which we find beneficial to the sound of Mark VI tenors) and the horn has never been severely damaged. The neck is original (though not serial number as would be the case on French finished models). THIS IS A PLAYER’S HORN. This horn simply sings! It might be ugly, but if you are more concerned about performance over looks, then this is a sax you MUST consider!!
Aren’t All Mark VI’s Made in France? Yes… but it’s more complicated than that…
During the run of the Mark VI, there were actually 3 different final finishing factories. All of the metal parts were made 100% by Selmer Paris in France on all Mark VI’s. However, depending on where the particular saxophone was to be sent to, it could have been finished in France, London or the USA. This finishing would include the padding, lacquering/plating, engraving and other finishing touches.
For example, Mark VI’s made for the USA market would also see the serial numbers stamped on the necks by Selmer USA (which is why this horn’s neck, although original, does not have a serial number on the neck). Selmer USA would also engrave the phrase “Mark VI” on either the body near the octave key (first few years) or on the band connecting the bell and bow (the majority of production) whereas Selmer Paris did not engrave/stamp the phrase anywhere on the horns.
You can tell which facility performed the final finishing on a Mark VI by the finish & engraving. This horn has the original finish of a lacquered body with silver plated keys. The engraving is also more in line with what you would have seen on a more modern Selmer up through 2010. These are both indicators of it’s French assembly & finishing.
