About this Used Keilwerth Shadow Tenor Sax – Serial Number 125931
This Keilwerth Shadow Tenor Sax was originally bought brand new from our shop in August 2010. It was used by an advancing player who has since continued on in to a full time professional musician on tour. However, like many players, his individual tastes and preferences continued to evolve and he has since switched to Yanagisawa WO Series saxophones for his primary performance horn. So we are selling this tenor for him. We have performed a “Minor Overhaul” in our SaxophoneRepairs.com ProShop to bring it back in to wonderful performance level.
About the Keilwerth “Shadow”
The Shadow Tenor is an SX90R design with the major change of the material used in the tube (neck, body, bow & bell) construction. Instead of brass, the Shadow Tenor is made from solid nickel-silver. Nickel-silver is an alloy comprised of 60% copper, 20% nickel & 20% zinc (regular brass is 70% copper and 30% zinc). The name “nickel-silver” is due to the metal’s appearance being lighter in color than nickel but not quite as light as silver.
The nickel-silver used on this design gives the horn a little brighter sound but also provides a more vibrant response. Many people find this horn to be more flexible for jazz, rock & pop style playing. The Shadow Tenor has the tubing plated with black nickel and deluxe hand engraved. The keys are silver plated and equipped with black pearls and black pads.
Additional Information
Soldered Rim Toneholes
The Keilweth Shadow Tenor utilizes a “Soldered Rim” tonehole. In this setup, the tonehole is manufactured first like other traditional “straight” tone holes. Keilwerth then solders on a solid brass rim to create the tonehole surface. This helps to add mass to the horn in a way that increases the tonal depth of the horn while not increasing the resistance.
Rolled vs. Rimmed Toneholes
Many years ago, Keilwerth used to perform a “rolled tonehole”. The rolled tone hole gave much of the same performance as the modern soldered rim tone hole used today. However, the rolled tonehole has 1 major draw back… repair. When you have a damaged tonehole, technicians will use a file to attempt to make the tonehole surface flat again. With a rolled tonehole, there is a finite limit to how much filing can be performed before you break through the roll. With a soldered rim, the rim is a solid piece of brass meaning that you can file further and if needed, even replace the tonehole rim entirely.
Every Shadow tenor we send out to a customer is not released from us unless it has been completely setup in our shop first. This is because the setup on the horn is of the utmost importance! Sometimes, a saxophone (regardless of who the manufacturer or the price point is) comes in needing 20 minutes of adjustments and then the very next one can require 2 hours! So if you were to get 5 of the same model right out of the box, they will all play different which leads people to believe that they are “good” or “bad” saxes… but the reality is that the one that was the best out of the 5 was likely the one that needed the least amount of work and on the flip side, the “bad” sax was the one that needed 2 hours worth of adjustments!
Once the same 5 saxophones are properly regulated and adjusted to perfection, they become near identical saxophones that even the pickiest of players would be challenged to pick a true “favorite” horn. However, since most stores do not or even can not perform this setup, the player never knows this and is simply relying on the luck of the draw. This is why we perform our setup (in our www.SaxophoneRepairs.com ProShop) on them before delivering your new sax to you. You trust us with the purchase of your new Shadow tenor and we want to make sure that you are rewarded by giving you your ideal saxophone setup flawlessly!
