Original 1949 Buescher 400 Top Hat & Cane Tenor Sax
Great Condition, Original Lacquer, ProShop Overhauled!
The search for the “perfect” vintage saxophone is a daunting one. In a market ruled over by the mystique of the Mark VI, many players still find that the sheer tone and power of the vintage American made saxophones are what they have always been in search of. Whether it is the Buescher 400 Top Hat & Cane, Conn 10M or King Super 20, rarely though do players get a chance to find one of these great legendaryhorns in great condition both physically and in performance terms. Well, if you are one of these players, do we have the horn for you!
Buescher 400 Top Hat & Cane Tenor, Serial 317404 – Original Lacquer
This Buescher 400 Top Hat & Cane tenor sax was made in 1949 (serial 317404) and was kept in good overall condition. The neck has been previously bent down and repaired. The tube was repaired well (no major crease) but the solder work on the brace is not beautiful, but is functional. For those more informed on the Buescher 400 Top Hat & Cane models, this horn is also known as a model B11, which is the original design & craftsmanship, made well prior to the Selmer USA buyout of Buescher. To many players, this horn is the pinnacle of saxophone design and performance as it blends more modern design with vintage performance & craftsmanship.
Professionally Setup
We have completely serviced this tenor in our SaxophoneRepairs.com Sax ProShop. We did not need to overhaul the horn as most of the pads were in great shape. We did replace a few pads in the servicing. Proper Buescher “Snap-In” resonators were used throughout the horn (we even replaced a few that were missing when the horn came to us).
Unfortunately, the original Norton Screw-In Springs had been previously removed and replaced with the newer Allied replacement springs. However, we found that some of these were simply too light of gauge to provide proper tension. So we did replace the mainline stack keys in the left and right hand with proper Original Norton Screw-In Springs from our private vintage parts stash. We unfortunately did not have enough to generate a full set to replace everything, but we did at least place them where needed to restore proper tension and feel throughout the horn.
Additional Information
We know how personal buying a musical instrument can be. Players have an obvious concern with shipping a saxophone from out of state that you haven’t even had a chance to try. Combine that with the large ticket price of this horn and it’s obvious that many customers can become hesitant about pulling the trigger only to lose out to another buyer because they waited too long. Don’t let that be you!
