Additional Information
Scott Cao 017 Features
The Scott Cao 017 series is made in Scott’s China workshop. This workshop is staffed by a group of skilled makers trained by Scott Cao’s students. The Cao 017 violins feature carved scroll, carved tops, back arching and beautifully applied hand-painted varnish. These instruments are graduated by hand and finished according to the specifications of the traditional style. No other “student” violin maker puts as much craftsmanship and effort in to their instruments!
String Options
We have always preferred to equip the Scott Cao 017 violin with better grade strings. This instrument really benefits from the higher quality performance string. However, many music stores simply care about the cost and tend to not upgrade the violin to these strings. We like to give you the option. You can choose from:
- D’Addario Prelude | student – long life
- D’Addario Helicore | step-up – balanced tone, good durability
- Thomastik Dominant | professional – richest tone, shortest life
Case & Bow
The Scott Cao 017 violin includes a standard oblong student case and a Brazilwood bow. We also offer bow upgrade options. Give us a call to build your ideal outfit!
Scott Cao 017 Model Options
The Scott Cao 017 violin is available in 3 “models”. All 3 models are made side by side in the same facility to the same workmanship. The difference between the 3 models is in the wood source (country) & the finish. All models use spruce for the tops & maple for the backs and sides.
- Scott Cao 017 – Chinese Tone Woods with Moderate Flame, Standard Varnish
- Scott Cao 017CE – Same as 017 but with Antique Varnish
- Scott Cao 017E – European Tone Woods but with Less Flame, Antique Varnish – Best Seller!
We sell more of the 017CE and 017E models due to the antique finish being more popular. Sometimes our supply is limited to one model or the other due to Scott Cao’s availability. If you are interested in a specific model of the 3, please let us know prior to placing the order. Otherwise, we will simply ship from the supply that we have available at the time of the order (usually the 017E)
Desert Aged
Being based in the desert of Las Vegas, we have a very unique ability to let instruments “age”. As string instruments age and the wood dries, the instrument will improve over that time. However, as these instruments dry in our desert climate of Las Vegas, this process of aging occurs much faster than most areas of the country.
This aging gives you an instrument that is more vibrant, responsive and more stable as a result of this aging!
We do make sure to monitor our instruments and make any necessary adjustments that are needed as a result of this process prior to shipping to you.
In Home Trial
Kessler & Sons Music offers a 3 day trial / return policy on the Scott Cao 017 Violin outfit. There are no cleaning fees or restocking fees (assuming that the item is returned in proper condition). We know that you need to be able to test the instrument to make sure that it is the right instrument for you. We carefully package the instrument so that it arrives safely to you.
Please note that when we ship the instrument, we wrap the bridge and the tailpiece in tissue paper so that IF the bridge were to fall down in shipping, no damage occurs to the instrument. We do not ship the violin with strings under full tension but there is enough tension to keep everything in place while in transit. If you do decide to return the violin, please make sure to follow the same guidelines so that the instrument is returned in the same condition it was sent out.
Please read our terms & conditions (link at the bottom of the page) for full details on this policy.
